1) What images does the title suggest to you? The title suggested me the idea that the story would be about how David used to live in Africa during his childhood and the fun or unpleasant experience he had. 2) Please summarize the story. David and his friend, Hugh had very different childhoods.

For example, my last year in highschool, i made the all district team. But he made the all-state team. Also, I was very popular, but not quite as popular as Joel. I never resented Joel for this, because he was my best friend for the same reasons that so many other people were friends with him, which was awesome!

This article compared two childhoods that were completely opposite of each other. Sedaris who had a more normal childhood told of his jealousy towards Hugh who got to go to an Ethiopian slaughterhouse as a fifth grade field trip. Sedaris then begins to claim Hugh’s childhood as his own, and the reader soon realizes that Hugh is Sedaris’ “partner”.

Hugh, the main character looks back on his life, and sees Africa totally different than an American boy would. I think hugh wanted more stucture, and even more simpleness to his childhood life, whereas the American boy would like nothing better than to throw rocks at an alligator, or move to the congo, or have a monkey and two horses as pets. However, “Remembering my Childhood on the Continent of Africa” was very enjoyable. His feelings towards his friend became evident without him having to come right out and express his jealousy. He viewed his life in North Carolina from a boring perspective compared to Hugh’s adventurous life in Congo.
